Wanted: Experienced MUN delegates to mentor high school students
Posted on: November 23, 2009

Dear UBC MUN delegates,

An awesome opportunity has come up and we need your help! We have been contacted by Killarney Secondary in East Vancouver. They have recently formed a MUN club and are interested in gaining experience. However, they do not feel prepared enough at this time to attend UBC MUN. Instead they would like to shadow a delegate throughout the conference.

This is how it would work:

1. A high school student is paired with a university student.

2. The university student assigns simple research tasks to the high school student to assist in preparing their platform.

3. The university student decides whether or not he/she will invite the high school student to "shadow" them during the UBC Model UN conference for a session or sessions. This will depend on whether or not the high school student demonstrated responsibility in the research tasks assigned.

4. The high school students that have completed their research successfully and have been invited by their mentors to the Model UN Conference will observe the sessions.

What's in it for you?

A letter of reference from the groups sponsor teacher detailing your leadership, mentoring, delegating, organizing, debating and research skills. Plus an awesome opportunity to help someone with similar interests to yours and share all that you have learned.

Interested?

The domino effect at Berlin Wall celebration
Posted on: November 12, 2009

Scores of celebrants assembled in Berlin in the pouring rain Monday night to watch nearly a mile of giant dominoes drop as a stand-in for the Berlin Wall. One thousand giant domino pieces fell in a little less than a minute, stretching from the site formerly known as Checkpoint Charlie to the Reichstag building. The Goethe Institute distributed the oversized Styrofoam dominoes around the world so they could be decorated by children before the "Festival of Freedom."
